About this site
These photographs are a selection from a lifetime of seeing. Most were made within the last three years but some are older images that have been re-imagined using new tools/skills, which are always evolving. What I saw ten years ago is not always what or how I see today. Tone sculpting, color grading, composition, ... are fluid things.
Photography is my lifelong passion, along with a quest to understand how the world works. My formal training took place in Northern Virginia and Zone VI studios and I have exhibited frequently in addition to accepting commercial assignments. I grew up in Arlington, Virginia, graduated from the University of Virginia, and now make my home on Oak Island, North Carolina.
Before converting to digital imaging, I used 35mm, medium format, and large (4x5) format film cameras. Now I use Nikon camera bodies and mostly Nikkor lenses. Adobe Photoshop and tools from f.64 form the backbone of the processing side with Epson photo printers and inksets handling fine print production.
My other passion is turning data into information in fields as diverse as energy, environmental programs, risk management, and public safety. Clients include federal and state agencies, associations, and private sector firms. Leisure interests are backpacking and mountaineering, birding, bicycling, and related outdoor activities. As an avid reader in a wide range of subjects my curiosity finds its way into the photographs I make, embedding questions for the viewer into each image.
